A Year in Review: 2015 at The Yard

June 12, 2016/ by Tara M. F. Leavitt

2015 was an exciting year at The Yard, and not just because we’ve continued to grow and opened our Herald Square location. 2015 was great for The Yard because it was great for our members!

Yard members at our Lincoln Square location have continued to grow and develop their businesses, including. Datasift, who partnered with Facebook to give marketers access to social data, an unprecedented move in the world of social media.

Lincoln Square members TalkSpace, who have secured over $13mm in funding, just last month partnered with Columbia University to launch extensive studies around their mobile therapy tools. Another Lincoln Square member, MOGUL, a content and network platform for women founded by Tiffany Pham, recently expanded to include an education and courses vertical.

The Yard’s Brooklyn location had some big success stories this year as well. Thunderclap, the world’s first crowdspeaking platform, hosted campaigns for AmeriCorps and L’Oréal and has since supported messaging to reach over 3.5 billion people worldwide.

Makr, an iOS app that enables people to design and print one-of-a-kind materials (and Yard member since May, 2013), was acquired by Staples last spring, a pairing that allows high-end custom branding for businesses faster and more accessible than ever. And, yes, they insisted to keep their offices at The Yard.

Last year The Yard collaborated with numerous brands and companies, including sponsorship partnerships with events we believe support and enhance not just The Yard’s community but also the larger community of creators and innovators in New York City: The 6th Annual Doc NYC Film FestivalThe Food Book FairThe Taste of Williamsburg and a special dog adoption event with Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue.

The Yard played host to dozens of members-only events as well. Last year The Yard premiered The Innovation Lounge Powered by Samsung at our Flatiron location where members and their guests could discover and trial Samsung devices and borrow them risk free. When the Herald Square location opened, The Yard welcomed The Innovation Lounge to our newest location where we hosted weekly Lunch + Learns around topics like Virtual Reality and Wearable Technologies.

The Yard Herald Square hosted the first ever ADAPT Conference in October, featuring art, lectures and discussions, and our LES rooftop deck welcomed a party with General Assembly, Fluent City and Priv, not to mention a special event with Moleskine where all attendees received free gifts and tools for staying productive.

Speaking of tools for staying productive, we asked a few Yard members about their best tricks and tips to stay productive and you can watch them answer here.

And then there’s the artwork at The Yard! Dozens of artists exhibited across our locations this year, including Jay Milder and Judy RifkaMatthias MaierRebecca NortonMichael Rubenstein, as well as collaborative exhibitions with No Window Shopping and IFAC.

And this month we’re hosting receptions for two new art exhibitions: Wednesday, 1/13 at our LES location and Thursday, 1/14 in Brooklyn.

Who knows what 2016 has in store? All we can really be sure of is we will continue to work hard at cultivating an environment and community at The Yard where companies can grow and conjure success.

Oh, and we’re opening our new Flatiron North location with a 5,000 sq.ft. dedicated events space… stay tuned!

Since 2011, The Yard has delivered clean, bright and energizing environments to do serious work. Here’s to 2016 and beyond!
