We invited artist and self-love advocate P.S.Kaguya to chat with us at The Yard: Gowanus about her experience in the fashion and beauty world and why she decided to turn the industry on its head. P.S.Kaguya dedicates her work towards expressing her truest self in hopes that others will gain the confidence and strength to do the same.
Take a look at the steps she took to create a new path for herself and how her message skyrocketed.
What inspired you to create your brand?
I was a photographer working in fashion and beauty, but I realized I didn’t really like how the fashion world was working for me, so I decided to make an Instagram. I decided that I needed to feel comfortable in my own skin.
I started taking selfies and self-portraiture and was like, “Hey, you know what? You decided to do this not to be a model but to feel better about yourself – to walk more comfortably.” In all of my years, I never thought I would be a model or influence anyone, even just touching one random person that I didn’t know. I just want to feel free and comfortable, and it all started with me starting my self-love journey.
What message do you want to send?
I hope I’m able to spread my word as much as possible, creating change in the modeling industry to make it more accessible to normal-sized girls and alternative types. It’s a whole thing about identity. It’s one thing to be comfortable in your skin but another to be comfortable in your race. I believe in the power of being you and being super unapologetic.
You only have one life, just live your best one.
