Sitting is the New Smoking

“Sitting is the new smoking” is something I’ve heard Morris, the owner of The Yard, say many many times… to me, to our colleagues, our members, even offering someone his own seat on the subway comes with a caveat, a warning: “Sitting is the new smoking!”

I don’t think Morris has ever sat at his desk, he’s always moving around, chatting with members, maybe he’ll pause to write an email at his standing desk, but then he’s back moving around, taking a call through his headphones… on his way out of the office he’ll remind me one more time: “Sitting is the new smoking.”

It’s not new for us, we offer standing desk options at all of our office spaces and coworking locations in NYC. In fact, our colleague Mozy also uses a standing desk and wrote a post recently on 5 Tips to Rock Your Standing Desk.

And now, the true divining rod of New York City, The New Yorker, published a funny article on the subject… I quote:

I know what you’re thinking: Won’t I look strange if I’m the only one in my office standing up to work? Not as strange as you’ll look when you keel over dead at your computer from a lethal combination of sciatica and weak calves. Look around you and you will likely notice that several of your co-workers have already died this way.

Save yourself while you still can! If your office doesn’t have standing desk options, you’re welcome to join us at The Yard.
