Sugar Sweet Sunshine is a piece of decadent heaven in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. We spoke with shop owners Debbie & Peggy to learn about the pair’s inspiration in starting their own business, and of course their favorite cupcakes!
Q: How long has Sugar Sweet Sunshine been around? Is there a story behind the name?
We opened in 2003. Peg and I were on our way to see the space we’re in now. We still hadn’t settled on a name for the bakery. We were walking down Bowery & Bleecker, and etched in the ground was a big heart with the words “Sugar Sweet Sunshine, Love”. After we saw the space and got settled in our new apartments, we talked about how we felt like we had found our home, and we both loved the name Sugar Sweet Sunshine.
Q: What inspired you and Peggy to start your own business and open up a tasty sweets shop?
We were both doing the actor thing while working at another well known bakery to support ourselves. Years later, we grew tired of being in the world of auditioning and trying to make ends meet. We realized the most fun we had was working in the bakery environment, and we thought, “Why don’t we try this?”
Q: What’s your all-time favorite cupcake? Have you created any ultra customized desserts over the years?
Peg’s favorite is the Black & White, and mine is the Ooey Gooey.
Crazy over the top desserts? We tried a Vinegar Pie once. And a Bacon Cupcake.
Q: You’re just around the corner from The Yard: LES! What has your experience been like with our community of small businesses and coworkers?
It’s a very strong, dynamic community! We’re happy to have found The Yard: LES, just a few blocks away. They’ve welcomed us with open arms.
We’re so happy to be just a skip and a throw away from Sugar Sweet Sunshine! If you have yet to try their cupcakes, today’s the day. My personal favorite? The Ooey, Gooey!
