Happy Women’s History Month!

March 12, 2019/ by Olivia Ramirez

If you know us even the littlest bit, you know we don’t need a reason to celebrate the incredible women in our lives. But hey, why not? We’re very excited to call out just a few of the inspiring women in our community and their recent accomplishments. In honor of Women’s History Month, don’t forget to honor the women in your life, and carry the love into every day thereafter.

In Entertainment

From Bat Mitzvah dancer to publicity intern to founder of Big Picture Media. Huge shoutout to member Dayna Ghiraldi-Travers for flipping the music industry on its head and paving the way for women publicists! Take a look at this interview in Substream Magazine to see how she did it.

Russian Doll premiered on Netflix this month, and the rave reviews and story hypotheses keep on coming. Check out a recent interview with our member, show co-creator, and director Leslye Headland and a brilliant analysis of the hit show here. [Spoiler Alert]

The fantastic Gayle Keller has also had her hand in great television this season. HBO’s Crashing has a fresh new face in comedy, Madeline Wise, a.k.a. Kat, who spoke with Fansided about her audition for the show with our very own Gayle Keller. Gayle has been a casting director for Crashing, The Big Sick, At Home With Amy Sedaris, and more. We love having her in our community and watching her work come to life on the screen!

In Education

The team at Future Leaders Incubator does tremendous work each month defining what student success looks like for school educators across diverse communities. Together, they increase equity and inclusion, and we couldn’t be more thankful to have them as a constant source of inspiration to everyone in our space.

Celebrating Black History Month at The Yard: Gowanus

Last month, Jill Glassbrook and Desiree Hunter, Executive Director and Managing Director of Future Leaders Incubator, collaborated with Community Manager at The Yard: Gowanus Nicholas Minors to host a special celebration for Black History Month. We were thrilled to have them co-host to further spread the word of their mission and foster community in the Gowanus space. Also to note, they recently synced up with member Cornelius Minor, educator and literacy advocate, who joined their board!

In Lifestyle

We can’t get enough of the heart-warming, inspiring stories that develop at The Yard each year, whether they’re about members finding ways to work together or developing personal relationships. Flatiron North and Flatiron South members Nicole Gibbons and Eunice Byun, founders of paint startup Clare and kitchenware brand Material, developed a truly empowering relationship that went from friendly work chats to long-lasting friendship. We started meeting once a month for coffee, formally. The more we met, the more we got to know each other, and it went from “I’m having coffee with a founder” to “I’m having coffee with a friend.” – Nicole Gibbons
